Industrial Salt in the UAE: Grades, Uses and How to Choose a Supplier

Salt looks like the simplest product a plant can buy, yet the wrong grade can foul a water softener, upset a chlor-alkali cell or leave insoluble residue in a drilling brine. This guide explains the main grades of industrial salt (sodium chloride) used in the UAE and the wider GCC, what each one is good for, and what to check before you choose a supplier.

The main grades of industrial salt

  • Rock salt is mined from underground deposits and crushed and screened to size. It is economical and widely used where some insoluble matter is acceptable, such as de-icing and some brine-making.
  • Solar (sea) salt is produced by evaporating seawater or brine in open pans. Quality depends on the source and on washing; well-washed solar salt is a common feedstock for brine production.
  • Vacuum or PDV salt (pure dried vacuum salt) is made by evaporating purified brine under vacuum. It is the purest and most uniform grade, with very low insolubles, and is chosen where purity matters most.
  • 盐片 and pellets are compressed high-purity salt made for water softeners and regeneration systems. Their shape lets brine form evenly without "bridging" in the brine tank.

Where industrial salt is used

  • Chlor-alkali production: Chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen are made by electrolysing a purified brine. Calcium, magnesium and sulphate in the salt have to be removed before the brine reaches the cells, so consistent salt quality keeps treatment costs and downtime down.
  • Water treatment and softening: Ion-exchange softeners in factories, hotels, hospitals and district cooling plants are regenerated with brine. Tablets or high-purity granular salt avoid sludge build-up in brine tanks.
  • Oilfield brines: Sodium chloride brines are used in drilling, workover and completion fluids, often alongside potassium chloride and calcium chloride. Low insolubles and a consistent particle size help the brine mix clear and fast.
  • Industrial processes: Salt is used in textile dyeing, leather processing, detergents and other chemical processes, each with its own purity needs.
  • De-icing and dust control: In colder markets this is a major use; in the GCC it matters mainly for export.

Food-grade salt is a separate product with its own food-safety requirements and should not be confused with industrial grades.

What to check before you buy

  • Purity (NaCl content) and insolubles: Ask for the specification and a certificate of analysis for each batch, not only a brochure figure.
  • Calcium, magnesium and sulphate levels: These drive brine-treatment cost in chlor-alkali plants and scaling in softeners.
  • Moisture and particle size: These affect flow in hoppers and conveyors, caking in storage and how quickly the salt dissolves.
  • Consistency from batch to batch: A plant tuned to one quality suffers when the next shipment is different. Ask how the supplier controls variation.
  • Packaging and handling: Industrial salt moves in bulk, in jumbo bags (FIBCs) or in 25 kg / 50 kg bags. Match the format to your unloading equipment and storage space.
  • Supply security: For continuous processes, check the supplier's stock levels, sources and delivery capacity, so one late vessel does not stop your plant.

Bulk logistics matter as much as the salt

For large users the cost and reliability of moving salt are often as important as the price per tonne. Port handling, covered storage that keeps the salt dry, bulk trucking and just-in-time call-offs all affect the final delivered cost. A supplier that controls its own storage and transport can usually keep deliveries steady when shipping schedules slip.

Choosing a supplier in the UAE

A good industrial salt supplier should provide a written specification, a certificate of analysis per batch, stable quality over time, packaging that suits your site and the logistics to deliver on schedule. It also helps when the same supplier can provide related chemicals, such as potassium chloride and calcium chloride for brines or caustic soda and salt tablets for water treatment, so you deal with fewer vendors.
